This article is based on analyses of recent scientific journals concerning the functioning of the brain and therapies that aim to remodel it to treat mental disorders.
The world of psychology is in turmoil, with the "renaissance" of psychedelic-assisted therapies attracting considerable attention. These approaches, while not a one-size-fits-all or risk-free solution, have one undeniable merit: they have brought to light a powerful psychological concept, "Set & Setting." This principle, while fundamental to these therapies, is actually a universal truth that applies to any process of personal development and healing. It teaches us that the success of any process of change depends as much on our state of mind as on the environment around us.
Mastering Set & Setting is the recognition that our inner and outer worlds are in constant interaction. By learning to orchestrate these two worlds, we no longer undergo change; we create it.
This article aims to demystify Set & Setting , showing how this concept, far from being a mere term from psychedelic research, is an essential tool for anyone wishing to undertake an inner journey, safely, without substances. Mastering it means learning to become the conscious architect of one's own transformation.

What is "Set & Setting"? The two pillars of the experience
The concept of Set & Setting is considered the cornerstone for ensuring safe and successful psychedelic experiences. The term was popularized in the 1960s to describe the importance of non-pharmacological factors on a substance's effects. It consists of two inseparable elements.
The "Set": Your Mindset as a Healing Playground
The "set" (for mindset in English) refers to the patient's internal state of mind: their intentions, expectations, emotions, fears, and beliefs. In therapy, this "set" is the starting point for all work. It is the ground on which the seeds of change will be planted.
Intentions: Before undertaking any process, defining your intentions is crucial. What am I trying to understand? What wound do I want to explore? What are my fears? Having clear intentions helps guide the therapeutic process and transform the chaos of thought into a constructive path.
Expectations: Our expectations can be both an ally and a hindrance. If they are realistic and filled with curiosity, they can open us up to transformation. If they are rigid or utopian ("I want this session to solve all my problems"), they can lead to frustration and blockage.
Emotions: The initial emotional state is a determining factor for success. Entering a process with an attitude of fear or resistance will yield different results than entering with curiosity, courage, and openness. This is why preparatory work on emotions is essential.
Setting: the environment as an ally or as an obstacle
Setting refers to the physical, social, and emotional environment in which the experience takes place. It is the framework that surrounds us and can either reassure or threaten us. The environment is a powerful amplifier of our emotions and thoughts.
The physical environment: A calm, clean, comfortable, and safe space is a prerequisite. Distractions (phone, notifications) should be minimized to allow for total concentration. The goal is to create a space that allows the body and mind to feel safe, free to explore the depths of one's psyche.
Social Environment: Our support network is an essential component of "Setting." Is my environment caring? Will I be judged? Having a quality support network, or at least a space where we can express ourselves without fear, is a pillar of any healing.
The emotional environment: The most important of the "settings" is the therapeutic framework itself. Trust with the professional, kindness, safety, and non-judgment are essential conditions for the work to take place.
Applying "Set & Setting" to your life: from theory to practice
The secret of Set & Setting isn't reserved for the most cutting-edge therapies. It can be applied to any aspect of your life. It's an exercise in mindfulness and intentionality.
Before a difficult discussion: Take the time to prepare your "Set": What is my intention for this conversation? What do I hope to get out of it? What fears do I want to free myself from? Then, optimize your "Setting": Choose a quiet place, without distractions. Set a time when you are both available and mentally present.
Before a meditation or mindfulness exercise: Prepare your "Set" by setting a clear intention: "I will open myself to what comes without judgment." Then, optimize your "Setting": Create a quiet space, put away your phone, put on some soft music, light a candle. These small actions send a signal to your brain that you are entering an inner workspace.
Before a big life change: Expatriation, a career change, a new relationship... Prepare your "Set": What are my fears and expectations about this change? What values do I rely on? Then, optimize your "Set": Surround yourself with people who support you, read up on the subject, train yourself. These are the conditions that will give you the best chance of success.
Set & Setting is the recognition that our inner and outer worlds are in constant interaction. By learning to orchestrate these two worlds, we no longer undergo change, we create it.
Conclusion: Set & Setting, a skill for life
Science has one undeniable merit: it helps us put words to intuitions. Set & Setting , a principle that emerged from psychedelic therapies, is one of these words. It reminds us that the success of a healing or personal development process does not depend on a single factor, but on the synergy between our mental preparation and the quality of our environment.
Mastering these two factors is a skill that can transform your life. It teaches you to become a conscious agent of your own healing, creating the conditions necessary for change to take place. My goal is to support you in this process, so that you can become the architect of your own transformation.
